CYCLONE YASI RESPONSE UPDATE FROM WTMA & DERM 08/03/11

A downloadable map showing the approximate location of feeding stations is now available via the DERM website.

Volunteers are still needed at Garner’s Beach and Innisfail QPWS to help cut-up fruit. Work at Innisfail is occurring on Monday, Thursday and Friday afternoons. So far, work has only been on weekdays, but, if enough volunteers are interested, weekend sessions can be organised at Garner’s Beach. Continue reading →

As of today:

• DERM have established 86 feed stations from theCardwellRangenorth to Flying Fish Point
• 2400 kg of fruit had been dropped by helicopter and placed at feeding stations
• Ten cameras are monitoring feed stations and are showing cassowaries using those sites
• Volunteers are still need at Garner’s Beach on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (and for another week or so also at Innisfail) to help cut-up fruit. Please contact:

CYCLONE YASI RESPONSE UPDATE FROM WTMA & DERM 23/02/11

Here’s a brief update on the Cassowary Feeding Programme (as of 21 February):

• 53 feeding stations have been established from the Cardwell Range north to Flying Fish Point
• 1500 kg of fruit distributed through feeding stations or dropped by helicopter
• Observations from the community have been very helpful in locating appropriate places for feeding stations
• QPWS’s Cassowary Response Team is still assessing the damage to cassowary habitat with more feeding stations and heli-drops to come
• Any volunteers willing to help with cutting up fruit at Garner’s Beach on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays should register with Jodie Eden:
